THERE IS £20
MILLION WAITING TO BE CLAIMED
If you
bought gas from npower in 2007 and have not had a refund you may be owed money.
Sorry to repeat myself (see 10 November column) but
there is still £20 million which the energy supplier npower wants to give back
to 700,000 people but it can’t find them.
Npower says it has written to all the 1.9 million
customers it owes money to – either at their current address if they are still
customers or at the last address npower has recorded if they have defected to
another (probably cheaper) supplier. Since October last year Npower has paid out
around £50 million to more than a million customers. But it now wants to find
the rest and reunite them with their £20 million.
Npower was forced to agree to the refunds by Consumer
Focus (which the Government plans to abolish in a couple of years). The energy
supplier had explained its prices badly and customers were charged more than
they should have been. The refunds average about £40 but some are more than
£100.
If you bought your gas from npower between 1 May and 31
October 2007 check your files and the back of the kitchen drawer for a letter
from npower sent in October or November 2010. If you find it, take it to any
Post Office with two forms of ID – one that shows you and one that confirms your
address – and you will be given the refund in cash.
If you have not had the letter, or can’t remember or
have thrown it away, don’t worry. You can still get the refund by registering
for the payment.
Not every gas customer is entitled to a refund as some
tariffs, including pre-payment meters, were not affected. The refunds only apply
to the gas charges, not to the electricity charges.
