Equitable Life is Britain's oldest mutual life insurance
company. Founded on Thursday 16 September 1762 at a meeting in the White Lion
tavern in Cornhill in the City of London, it closed for new business on 8 December
2000 leaving more than a million policyholders uncertain about their
future.
