Dated on the back in ms 'c.1879' though comparison with other images indicates it could be later.
This rare photograph is by John Jabez Edwin Mayall who was born around 1810 and died in 1901. The Grove Dictionary of Art describes Mayall as English (born in Manchester 1813) but other sources have him as American and born 1810. Certainly he worked in Philadelphia before setting up shop in London and, later, Brighton.
