A caricature depicting Wilkie in ecclesiastical dress preaching from a
copy of The New Magdalen on a pulpit labelled Charing Cross Theatre.
Probably dates from the production of the play there in 1875. Signed A.B.
the image is by
Alfred Bryan (1852-1899), a caricaturist who worked for the
Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. The National Portrait Gallery
has an image thought to be of
Bryan.
The original source has not been traced but this image
was used for the dustjacket and frontispiece of
Kenneth Robinson Wilkie Collins 2nd edition, London 1974.
