1874 - age 50
Photograph by the New York photographer Napoleon Sarony. Probably taken on Wilkie's visit there in March 1874. The picture is mounted on plain black card with Sarony's printed signature and his address 680 B'Way both printed in red.

Wilkie wrote in 1883 "You will find a choice of many admirable portraits of me taken by my good friend Sarony...true works of Art, sold at most moderate prices. The English photographs of me are not comparable to Sarony's." And in 1884 he wrote "...a really beautiful photograph portrait taken of me by Sarony of New York ten years since. The more recent portraits, taken in England, are nothing like so good as works of art."
