1857 - aged 33
Cabinet photograph by Herbert Watkins, 215 Regent Street.
This photograph has recently been dated to the first half of 1857 and is the first image of Wilkie with a beard.

In a letter to Herbert Watkins thanking him for copies taken at a recent sitting Collins wrote "The Photographs are really superb specimens of the art — especially the profile." (To Watkins 14 July 1857) and in a later letter on 20 March 1858 (Public Face I 157) he wrote to ask for further copies of "Your admirable (profile) Photograph of me".

Originally published in The Critic 5 June 1858, this image was also used for the engraving in Harper & Brothers's No Name 1863 and for other later images.
